Belgian Gaming Commision Moves To Ban Loot Boxes

Posted Nov 22, 2017 by DarthHazard

We reported last week that the Belgian Gaming Commission would be investigating loot crates in Battlefront 2 over concerns that they may be classed as gambling. And we now know that the investigation has found that, yes, loot boxes are a form of gambling.

According to VTM Nieuws, the Belgian Minister of Justice Koen Geens stated that "mixing gambling and gaming, especially at a young age, is dangerous for the mental health of the child". The Belgian Gaming Commision will now go through the EU's process to execute a ban for loot boxes although the exact details of what will happen next is yet to be known.

What impact this move will have on gaming will not be known until the ban comes into effect although EA has already pulled any in-game purchases from Star Wars Battlefront 2 due to the massive backlash and bad PR that followed the game's release. Is this move by the Belgian Gaming Commision good for gamers?
