Call of Duty: WWII Review

A return to the "boots on ground" gameplay has revitalised the Call of Duty franchise and an excellent campaign has meant this game has truly rescued Call of Duty and made it into a top game once again.

Call of Duty has received a lot of backlash over the past couple of years, mostly for releasing games such as Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare. Fans were outraged that the developers hadn't listened to their requests, and had decided to shy away from their traditional “boots on ground” gameplay by introducing futuristic and unrealistic gameplay. Since the massive backlash that followed those games, it was announced that Call of Duty would be going back to their original roots and bringing us a game based on World War 2. This news made me so happy and shocked, we were finally going to be getting a "boots on the ground" Call of Duty. I had to make sure that I stayed up to date with any news regarding the game because of the fact that I was so pumped for announcements!

As I’m having some issues with my power supply, I was only able to play the campaign without performance issues and I am very, very glad I played it. After seeing all of the trailers and news about the campaign, I was so pumped to play it. What could possibly be better than playing a Call of Duty campaign that is set during World War 2? Nothing! Compared to the last few releases of Call of Duty, the campaign was fairly lengthy and incredible. I was gripped from the beginning to the very end of the campaign, and I’ve already started replaying it through on veteran difficulty. The graphics, gameplay and storyline are fantastic, and it really makes you feel like you’re experiencing what it was like to be a part of the battle during World War 2. It’s not all boots on ground gameplay though, you will have missions where you are either based put in a tank, where you will be given full control of it or up in the sky fighting off enemy forces with your very own plane.

In previous releases, when players would lose health, you would only have to take cover and your health would regenerate after a certain amount of time. And if you needed some ammo desperately, you’d have to scavenge for it from dead enemies if you had the right perk of course. In Call of Duty: WWII however, when you’re low on health or ammo you would have to either scavenge for it or ask one of your squad members to chuck you some. It’s a great feature that adds that little bit of realism to Call of Duty and was a fantastic idea in my opinion.

There are a fair amount of changes to the campaign gameplay and physics when compared to the previous Call of Duty titles. I didn’t notice any bugs or gameplay issues whilst playing the campaign, which was great and it meant the experience was even better. Overall, I really enjoyed the campaign and as I said, it was that great I’m playing through it again already! I’d highly recommend purchasing the game (at least the campaign side of things) as I think players would really enjoy it if they loved the classic “boots on ground” gameplay. I haven’t been able to experience the multiplayer too much, unfortunately, but when I do I’ll make sure to review that aspect as well.

A competent game, albeit with a lot of problems that still need fixing. The balancing in the game is absolutely awful, but that's to be expected from a competitive game (especially one that tries to go into the professional scene).
