Stadia Destiny 2 Players Can Only Play With Other Stadia Players

Destiny 2: The Collection will be one of the first titles available to Stadia Pro subscribers, but it has been confirmed that players will be limited to only playing with other Google Stadia players at launch.

In a tweet from the Destiny general manager, Mike Noseworthy, it was confirmed that it won't be available at launch as they are looking at “delivering cross save to all platforms” although “there’s no policy or technological barrier preventing us from including Stadia”.

The tweet follows a support article that was posted by Bungie in which it stated that “Stadia is its own ecosystem, just like current existing platforms” therefore “Stadia players will only be able to play with other Stadia players”.

However, players will be able to take advantage of the cross-save feature which will mean that accounts will “preserve all gear, character and items across all platforms regardless of entitlements”. This would allow someone playing on their PlayStation 4 to continue on with an Xbox One without any character or progress changes.

This won’t be extended to expansions or matchmaking pools though. Expansion ownership will be connected to the platform that it was bought on which means that “players will need to purchase expansions on each platform that they wish to play that expansion content on”. Additionally, “each platform will have its own matchmaking pool”.

This may prove somewhat troubling to players looking forward to enjoying Destiny 2 on the Google Stadia as matchmaking times may be somewhat long at launch due to a lack of players.

Google Stadia will be launching in November 2019 in the US, UK, Belgium Finland, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Canada. Destiny 2 will be the first game that will be offered for free to Stadia Pro subscribers.

Are you worried that there won’t be enough players for Destiny 2 at launch? Or is it not an issue for you? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
