Gears 5 to Feature Cross-Play between Xbox One and PC

Just like we saw in the last Gears game – Gears 4 – its predecessor Gear 5 will also support cross-play between XBOX One and PC gamers as confirmed by Multiplayer Director Ryan Cleven.

Cleven also went on to confirm that the cross-play feature is supported not only for the Versus mode multiplayer, but also for the Escape, Horde and Campaign modes on the game.

"We are happy to confirm that Gears 5 will feature cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 PC for Versus Multiplayer," he said. "Cross-platform play also extends across the other Gears 5 modes to provide a great over-the-top three-player experience in Escape, an epic five-player Horde session, or three-player Campaign co-op."

It will also be possible for Xbox One players to opt-out of cross-playing against PC-based gamers and PC gamers are more likely to be using a mouse and keyboard combo versus a controller. As PC gamers know, using the mouse and keyboard offers a new level of precision versus the use of a controller. "For the launch of Gears 5, Xbox players will be able to opt-out of matchmaking against PC players for ranked matches," Cleven said.

Gears 5 launches this September, but will be running a technical test for the next two weeks and is open to anyone who has already pre-ordered the game or who holds an Xbox game pass. This ‘beta’ version of the game will allow players to try out the games Versus modes, Bootcamp training and the Tour of Duty challenge. However, gamers will not be able to try out the campaign or co-op modes just yet. The beta is available on both PC and Xbox One, which may give the developers a chance to fully test out the cross-play features before the live game launches.
